The Santa Sofia 2018 Recioto della Valpolicella is a fabulous dessert wine displaying an elegant and harmonious bouquet with intense, velvety sweet tannins and hints of sour cherries and tobacco at the finish. Fresh, clean and persistent. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, six months in Salvonian oak barrels, and at least 12 months in the bottle. It is at its best when paired with coffee desserts, shortbread, and chocolate cakes. Aged cheese is another good match.
Santa Sofia is located just north of Verona on the gentle slopes of the verdant Valpolicella Classico region and housed in the beautiful Villa Santa Sofia that was built back in 1560. The Begnoni family, who bought the villa along with its ancient cellars and vineyards in 1964, have worked to maintain the estate’s tradition of making approachable and elegant wines that represent the ancient Valpolicella terroir. Under their stewardship, Santa Sofia has gained a reputation which has seen it grow from a small, high-quality estate to one of the most significant realities in the Veronese winemaking world. The Santa Sofia 2018 Recioto della Valpolicella goes a long way to explaining why!
