The Caves Santa Marta Montes Pintados Train boasts a fruity, balanced profile, with the four grape varietals blended into a vibrant expression of the character of the Douro wine region.
Caves Santa Marta is a cooperative formed back in 1959 by winegrowers in Santa Marta de Penaguião, right in the heart of the historic Douro wine region in northern Portugal. These days, the cooperative produces around six million litres of wine per annum and exports around the world. Its commitment to quality is reflected in its beautiful, highly accessible port wines, varying from ruby to vintage, and a fascinating selection of wines that showcase Portugal’s many unique varietals—or very familiar varietals that take on unique nuances arising from the Douro region’s unique terroir. In the case of the Caves Santa Marta Montes Pintados Train, for example, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca are Portuguese classics. Tinta Roriz is actually the same varietal known as Tempranillo in Spain, but thanks to the Douro terroir, it tends to be darker, fuller-bodied, and slightly more rustic than Tempranillo, with notes of spice, chocolate, and a pronounced earthy character.
