Caves Santa Marta is a cooperative formed back in 1959 by winegrowers in Santa Marta de Penaguião, right in the heart of the historic Douro wine region in northern Portugal. These days, the cooperative produces around six million litres of wine per annum and exports around the world. Its commitment to quality is reflected in its beautiful, highly accessible port wines, varying from ruby to vintage, and a fascinating selection of wines that showcase Portugal’s many unique varietals—or very familiar varietals that take on unique nuances arising from the Douro region’s unique terroir. In the case of the Caves Santa Marta Terras de Penaguião, for example, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca are Portuguese classics, the former providing structure and intensity for full-bodied, concentrated wines with high tannins and the latter adding elegance and finesse to more perfumed, lighter-bodied wines. Tinta Roriz, on the other hand, is exactly the same varietal known as Tempranillo in Spain, but thanks to the Douro terroir, it tends to be darker, fuller-bodied, and slightly more rustic than Tempranillo, with notes of spice, chocolate, and a pronounced earthy character.
