The 2023 Zensa Primitivo Puglia from Orion Wines is produced from low-yielding, fully organic vineyards in the Salento area of southern Puglia. It displays a complex bouquet of cherries, dried berries and toasted almonds with a hint of smoke. Well structured, easy tannins, and a long, lingering finish delivering a burst of spiced cherries, bright fruit and earthiness at the end. Perfect with puttanesca or arrabbiata pasta, roast meats, spicy chorizo, and grilled eggplant.
In Italian, “Zensa” (pronounced “senza”) means “without” or “to do without,” the perfect name for a range of wines produced free of chemicals or pesticides, only what Mother Nature provides. The grapes for the 2022 Zensa Primitivo Puglia come from 20-35 year old vines trained in the Guyot system, harvested manually in late August. After gentle vinification, 30% of the wine is aged for eight months in second-passage American and French oak barriques.
