The 2021 Santa Sofia Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOC is undeniably a big wine, with a long, clean finish. The palate is velvety soft and smooth with fine tannins, an extremely dynamic acidity and a pleasant strength, offering flavours of oak, smoke, rich blackberry and dark cherry. Santa Sofia is located just north of Verona on the gentle slopes of the verdant Valpolicella Classico region and housed in the beautiful Villa Santa Sofia that was built back in 1560. The Begnoni family, who bought the villa along with its ancient cellars and vineyards in 1964, have worked to maintain the estate’s tradition of making approachable and elegant wines that represent the ancient Valpolicella terroir. Under their stewardship, Santa Sofia has gained a reputation which has seen it grow from a small, high-quality estate to one of the most significant realities in the Veronese winemaking world—one excellent example of which is this Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOC.
