The Santa Sofia Montegradella Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC 2018 is a terrific vintage, full-bodied with prune, cherry, clove and vanilla aromas and some hints of balsamic nuance. On the palate the wine is silky and delicate with lovely acidity and tannins softly integrated, showing flavours of cherries, blueberries and some barrique notes mixed with spices and cinnamon. A great winter warmer.
Santa Sofia is located just north of Verona on the gentle slopes of the verdant Valpolicella Classico region and housed in the beautiful Villa Santa Sofia that was built back in 1560. The Begnoni family, who bought the villa along with its ancient cellars and vineyards in 1964, have worked to maintain the estate’s tradition of making approachable and elegant wines that represent the ancient Valpolicella terroir. Under their stewardship, Santa Sofia has gained a reputation which has seen it grow from a small, high-quality estate to one of the most significant realities in the Veronese winemaking world—one delightful example of which is Montegradella Valpolicella Classico Superiore.
