The Cordero Gianduia Spread celebrates this iconic Piedmontese culinary product—a rich, complex paste that blends finely ground hazelnuts with a cocoa base to create a layered, nut-driven sweetness. Gianduia emerged out of a trade embargo that Napoleon imposed on British goods throughout Europe in the early 1800s, which made cocoa beans scarce and expensive. To eke out their chocolate supplies, Piedmontese chocolatiers decided to use hazelnuts, which were not only abundant locally but also offered an intense aroma, a creamy, buttery texture and superior taste. Gianduia was so successful that it made Turin the world chocolate capital that it remains today.
The Cordero family has been crafting and milling grains since 1958. Luigi Cordero launched his company Molino di Borgo San Dalmazzo in 1958 in Italy’s Piedmont to grind local grain for local bakeries. To celebrate their grandfather’s achievement, the family recently rebranded under his name, expanding their range and their markets without losing the integrity, authenticity and goodness that made the original mill so beloved in Borgo San Dalmazzo. The Cordero Gianduia Spread with its focus on locally grown hazelnuts is a great advertisement for Cordero’s intense and abiding “passione italiana.”
